
Basingstoke Radio team celebrating fifth birthday with the Mayor
Basingstoke Radio (BR) is a vibrant, volunteer-run community radio station based in Basingstoke, Hampshire. Located in south central England on the western edge of the North Downs, Basingstoke Radio, formerly Basingstoke Community Radio (BCR), provides local radio, community engagement, and inclusive
broadcasting for Basingstoke and the surrounding areas.
Founded in 2019 by David Chatten-Smith, a blind and passionate advocate for accessibility and community involvement, Basingstoke Community Radio was established with support from The National Lottery and operates as a registered charity. In 2026, the station rebranded as Basingstoke Radio.
Since launching, the station has grown into an important part of the local community. Basingstoke Radio delivers local radio programming, supports community events, and provides outside broadcasts using its fully branded outside broadcast vehicle, which is regularly seen around Basingstoke’s shopping centres, public spaces, and events.

The station provides a weekly fully accessible talking news service for print-disabled listeners, helping ensure that everyone can stay informed about local news, events, and community updates across Basingstoke and Hampshire.
Basingstoke Radio is based in the iconic Clock Tower, located within one of Basingstoke’s main shopping centres.
The station features three professional radio studios, including a dedicated training suite where volunteers can learn broadcasting, radio production, editing, and presentation skills.
Basingstoke Radio also delivers radio training workshops for young adults with learning difficulties, helping participants gain confidence, practical experience, and valuable transferable skills.
The success of Basingstoke Radio is driven by its dedicated volunteers, who come from all walks of life.
Together, they create a wide variety of programming including music shows, talk programmes, interviews, local news, and current affairs content, making the station a truly community-led local radio service.
Basingstoke Radio continues to be a beacon of community spirit, accessibility, and local broadcasting.
